Farm School

Farm Guests.   All pics.   400w. We welcome students and volunteers to participate in our daily field work and join us for delicious home cooked meals.

Our Farm School programs  are open to people just wishing to come help out for a day, stay in the Guest House for a weekend or join our team for a longer, more in-depth study period.

Our staff and interns will explain our basic farming techniques and give guests a chance to learn about organic and permaculture methods while helping us prepare soils, plant seeds, water, weed and mulch crops, and harvest fresh vegetables and fruits for our kitchen.

1 Day Course
Join us for a day on our Mt Fuji farm. In the morning we will do a farm tour and explain the basic organic and permaculture workings of our farm. After a bit of field work together (weeding, planting, mulching and picking depending on the season), we will eat a lunch of home-made pizzas, fresh salad and herb tea at the Solar Cafe with what we pick in the fields. Natsuco our farm manager or Jake our director will lead the activities and look forward to talking with you about the basics of organic farming. Please bring good outdoor clothes, shoes you can get dirty and something to keep the sun off.

1 Month Farm Course
For people who would like to join us for 4 weeks and learn more about our farming and permaculture techniques in-depth. Participants will stay in one of our cabins, work daily with interns and our farm manager. Our staff and interns will explain our basic farming techniques and give guests a chance to learn about organic farming while helping us prepare soils, plant seeds, water, weed and mulch crops, and harvest fresh vegetables and fruits for our kitchen. Students have 2 days off a week for Outdoor Activities to explore our hiking trails, visit the lakes, and general free time.

During the course you will have a chance to work with our farm staff everyday in the fields and greenhouses, and learn about our ;

- planning process

- seeding and planting schedules

- organic pest control

- natural mulching

- harvesting and drying techniques

- rain water collection systems

- and more…

The cost of the course is ¥85,000 which includes room & board.

Participants should come ready to work in all weather, so bring a hat, boots, rain jacket, sun-block, etc. (and a swim suit for days off at the lake!). We will provide futons but ask that you bring a sleeping bag. Spring and Fall are quite chilly in the evenings, so bring ample clothing. Our accommodations are very simple and rustic, so be prepared for outdoor living. More details about our facilities and the local activities are on our Guest House page.

Our education program is very informal, and it will be up to you to make the most of your time with us. You will learn our farm methods by working with us, but be sure to ask lots of questions and read through our library of books for extra information. Upon completing a 1 Month Farm Course, participants will receive an Earth Embassy Farm Course certificate of completion.

3 Month Internship
- If you would like to join our team and participate more deeply in our projects, we have seasonal openings for Embassy Interns.
- Interns receive full training, room and board, and are responsible for learning in detail and managing a certain aspect of the Farm and/or Café.
- Minimum length of internships: 3 months. Maximum length : Open.

The Intern will be responsible for helping maintain fields and greenhouses, directing short term volunteer helpers, preparing education materials for visiting school groups, and leading group tours and activities. Applicants (Japanese or foreigner ok,) should be good working with people, speak basic Japanese and/or basic English, be self motivated and willing to work hard. Training will be provided in organic farming, education methods, and sustainable project management.
